- German Gewehr 98 chambered in 8x57mm Mauser. Manufactured in 1917 by the Imperial Arsenal at Danzig (modern day Gdańsk).
- The Gewehr 98 was developed by Peter Paul Mauser as an improvement to the existing Mauser Model 1895, and was adopted by the Imperial German Army in 1898 to replace the ageing arsenal of Gewehr 1888's. Produced between 1898-1918, roughly 9,000,000 were manufactured in Germany, with 7,00,000 of those being produced during the First World War between 1914-1918. It remained in service in Germany until 1935, and has been adopted and produced on license across the world. It was the basis for the famous Mauser M98 sporting rifles which took the sporting and hunting worlds by storm after the First World War, which was reproduced and emulated by companies like John Rigby & Co. and Winchester. The Gewehr 98 saw extensive military service during the First World War, as well as the Boxer Rebellion, Spanish Civil War, and the Chinese Civil War.
- This particular rifle was produced towards the end of the First World War according to the '1917' date stamp on the reciever. It also has the German royal crown with the text 'Danzig' beneath it, indicating that the Imperial Arsenal in Danzig was the manufacturer. This Gewehr 98 also retains the iconic Lange Visier 'roller coaster' rear sight.
